Step-By-Step Area Mapping for The Fortress of Rockgate

For those who wish to lay out the terrain in each of the additional areas of the TFR tutorial module, here are instructions on what to do, step-by-step.

If you instead wish to download a version of the module that has all the areas built as far as terrain is concerned, so that you can pick up on the next section of the tutorial immediately, it can be downloaded from here.

These instructions assume you have gone through the first part of the Toolset Tutorial, and are aware of how to create new areas. Each segment below will contain the name of the area, the tileset to use, the size (width x height) and then instructions for which elements to drop into the area.

Abandoned Cabin

  • Name: Abandoned Cabin
  • Description: This is the starting point of TFR, and also the simplest to lay out.
  • Tileset: City Interior
  • Size: 4x4
  1. Select Terrain/Inn and drop it into the middle of the area. Note that you may need to subsequently play with the Terrain/Wall tool to achieve a square room:

  2. If it is not already there, drop a start area into the very middle of the room.

Road to Rockgate

  • Name: Road to Rockgate
  • Description: This is the transition area from the cabin (the module starting point) into the town of Rockgate.
  • Tileset: Forest

  2. Select the State Building 1 tool from the Groups menu, and drop it into the middle of town. This will serve as the Rockgate City Hall.

  3. Select the House 5 2x2 tool from the Groups menu, and place it just a couple squares north of the City Hall. This will be the Mayor's house.

  5. Select the Market 2x1 tool from the Groups menu, and drop it over on the eastern side of Rockgate. This will be the Rusty Buckle shop.

  6. Now comes your chance to get creative above and beyond the building requirements that must be in place to support the plot of the story. Go ahead and scatter more houses, cobblestone street, fountains, whatever you want, throughout town to give it some character. Just make sure you remember the five buildings we placed so that we can come back at a later time to configure them some more.
